4. Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. There was some controversy that a white director, Bartlett Sher, was staging this August Wilson examination of African-American lives in the early part of the last century. But his dream-like interpretation of the quest of Herald Loomis to find his missing wife was a triumph. The Obamas gave Broadway a boost by attending and more power to them for going to a straight play, a genre which needs more publicity than musicals.
Damn straight.
