the penguin told me to do it.

Rhapsody for Harmonica

You’ve heard Rhapsody in Blue performed as an orchestra and piano duet, as a piano solo, on five pianos, and by an orchestra in an animated film. Now, listen to this beautiful rendition for harmonica and piano.

The harmonica is played by Leung Pak-yue, who was about 13 at the time this video was shot. Chan Shek-lun is on the piano.

Christopher Walken: What I’ve Learned

Christopher Walken: What I’ve Learned:

Christopher Walken on some of life’s lessons that he’s learned. Among them:

I remember once, years ago, I was walking out a door — I’d been having a conversation and I was walking out the door, and this guy said to me, “Chris,” and I stopped and I turned, and he said, “Be careful.” And I never forgot that. And it comes back to me often: Be careful. That was good advice.

I don’t like zoos. Awful.

Etta James

Etta James passed away today at age 73. The video above is from 2009 and she still had it.

From her New York Times obituary:

Ms. James was not easy to pigeonhole. She is most often referred to as a rhythm and blues singer, and that is how she made her name in the 1950s with records like “Good Rockin’ Daddy.” She is in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame.

She was also comfortable, and convincing, singing pop standards, as she did in 1961 with “At Last,” which was written in 1941 and originally recorded by Glenn Miller’s orchestra. And among her four Grammy Awards (including a lifetime-achievement honor in 2003) was one for best jazz vocal performance, which she won in 1995 for the album “Mystery Lady: Songs of Billie Holiday.”

Regardless of how she was categorized, she was admired.

Let’s Stay Together

No matter what you think of him, can you think of another President who would do this?

Just for fun, here is my other favorite cover of Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together:

Inside the Wreck of the Costa Concordia

Alan Taylor’s InFocus blog has posted a number of haunting photos of last week’s wreck of the Costa Concordia cruise ship.

One week ago the cruise ship Costa Concordia ran aground off Isola del Giglio, Italy. Of the more than 4,200 aboard, 11 have been confirmed dead, 21 remain missing, and hopes of finding any more survivors are fading quickly. Rescue operations were called off earlier today amid fears the ship could quickly slip and sink deeper during worsening weather conditions. Captain Francesco Schettino remains under house arrest as investigators work to determine exactly what happened, and who was at fault. Rescue workers have spent the past seven days rappelling from helicopters, scaling the hull, scrambling inside and diving beneath the wreckage, racing against the clock to find anyone alive inside the massive wreck.

Update:

Another crazy image that puts the wreck into perspective…
